Relationships and recovery: Impact on self

Whether you are at the beginning of, in the middle of, or moving beyond a major change you have made to substance use and your life, the experience of that change can be gruelling and be pretty rough for all involved. The journey through problematic substance use will have left us holding a lot of shame and guilt. As we recover our emotions and we re-engage with life it can be easy to focus on those negatives and punish ourselves for past mistakes. That being said, we can’t always expect to be positive all the time, realistically we will experience days where negative feelings are very powerful.

Forgiving ourselves is one of the first steps of moving forward and making changes. Without forgiveness, it can hold us back from taking those necessary steps towards change. Think of this point of your life as an exciting opportunity to rediscover yourself. You may learn new interests, hobbies or parts of you that you weren’t aware of prior to change. Forgiveness sure can feel difficult to do, but is definitely a courageous act of kindness to yourself.

Although we can no longer change the past we have power to be mindful in our present and determine our future. Relationship with oneself is important. Practicing acceptance and kindness is crucial to continue along your journey of recovery. Find yourself again by breaking out of those chains that bind you to past mistakes. Celebrate you and your glorious future.
