Hi @Katr it's so great to hear that you're currently cutting down and being more mindful of your substance use :)

It's fantastic that the self-help modules have been useful in helping you to learn more about yourself.

It definitely can feel scary opening up and sharing our own personal story but it's also a big step in the recovery process. It takes a lot of courage reaching out, it's really good that you've joined us on the forum.

I'm wondering if you've considered telephone counselling or counselling through web-chat as a starting point? This process can often help people feel more comfortable opening up and also it can be a big relief to talk to someone without being judged.

It's always good to equip ourselves with more tools to get through tough times and having extra support through a GP or Social Worker can be beneficial too.

How are you going this evening?

    Hello members!
As you know the weekend is approaching and even though weekends give us that freedom away from our busy schedules, it is also a time to be extra cautious. Some of us may associate weekends with using substances to wind down at the end of the week or for pleasure, but we also know this can lead us into a bit of a deceiving trap.

What are everyones plans to keep sober this weekend? What other things can you do to help yourself relax or wind down? What can you do to prevent falling into these traps?

    Some helpful tips:
    - Steering clear of friendship groups you believe might stand as a roadblock or trigger for you.
    - Engaging in new activities, e.g exercise, playing board games, reading a new book, watching movies, getting in touch with your creative side by drawing/painting, going out for a meal at a new restaurant.
    - Think about all the reasons why you have stopped using in the first place to act as a reminder and extra motivation.
    - Think of the people and/or services you can call on for some support if needed, including members on the forums.

Remember, being positive is a great thing, but we can't expect ourselves to remain positive all the time. There are days or even weeks where things may feel extra heavy than other times. Give yourself permission to feel what you are feeling and accept it as just another day riding that wave in the journey of reaching your ultimate goal of remaining sober. Think about how you can look after yourself on these days and not how to 'get rid of' or 'fix' these feelings.

In preparation for the weekend, try this tool and reference back to it if you feel you need to:
    1. Write at least 3 short term goals for your future of being sober. (e.g financial, employment, self-care, travel)
    2. Write at least 3 reminders to help keep you on track.
    3. Write at least 3 things that you have achieved so far on your journey.

Keep pushing through! You can't change choices made in the past but you do have the power to make appropriate choices at present.

Hi everyone Thursday has come around again and it has been great reading through your posts so far :)

How has your week been? What have you got planned for the weekend?

What are some things that have worked for you over the past few weeks, especially where we have needed to keep busy at home?

Here are some ideas for things to do on the weekend to keep track with staying sober:

    - now is the time to refocus and do all the little things that you had no time to do before
    - keeping busy and in the present really helps with staying sober
    - Get out the cookbook (blow the dust off the cover!) and plan a wonderful meal... then cook and eat it :)
    - Wash your dog or just cuddle them, show them love and talk to them - animals love any sign of affection and give it back straight away (sometimes that is all we need at that moment..)
Sometimes when we feel that urge, it is as a replacement for something that we feel is missing in our lives ....and a cuddle or playing a game with your loved one whether furry, feathery or a human is a great way to increase your 'feel good' hormones :)
Most of all, be kind to yourself, check in with friends or family that are supporting you in your recovery...

The take away being that you are important and that even little things like listening to your favourite music and soaking in a bath will help you make it through the weekend and out the other end -

In preparation for the weekend, try this tool and reference back to it if you feel you need to:
    1. Write at least 3 reminders to help keep you on track - perhaps do this in a journal or a list that you stick up in the bathroom.
    2. Write at least 3 things that you have achieved so far on your journey.
    3. Write down a couple of longer term goals with a timeline.

    Stay well everyone x

    Thursday check in

Our running thread here is to check in with you every Thursday and work on some tips on how to get through the weekend which can be super tempting, perhaps more so because of Covid..

So, you have made the decision and you have already made some changes but how do you keep yourself ‘safe’ from sticking to these goals? What are some tips that you could share in this safe space?

The first step for some is to want to take action.
Then it might be about finding something to distract yourself. Perhaps it is about finding a delay to the urge to have a drink or an alternative routine to the usual, drink(s) after work or when 5pm hits..

Sometimes it helps to change our thinking in not sitting with the feeling of ‘never having a drink again’ to testing your new freedom from alcohol on a day-by-day, week-by-week process. Perhaps you can work at staying sober 4 weekends in row and then re-evaluating your situation, checking in with yourself…. Feeling proud and a sense of achievement.

Love to hear people's thoughts! What kind of distractions work for you? What has worked in the past when you have been able to achieve a sober weekend? :)

    Hello everyone,

Can you believe its Thursday night already!? This week went by FAST!

We love to check in with everyone on Thursday nights and see how you’re all going. How has your week been? What are your plans for the weekend?

For some, weekends are the hardest… but don’t worry – WE’VE GOT YOUR BACK!

I love re-reading the posts on this thread to get some ideas about how to stay sober on the weekend. Has anyone tried them? How did they go?

I’ve got another idea you can try out – see how it goes and then add them to your personal toolbox if you like the sound of it :D staying sober and on track with our goals is all about trying things out, seeing if they work and then adding them to your toolbox. You never have to do something you don’t want or that doesn't work for you.

One of my favourites is “urge surfing” (you can read more about it here: https://www.mindfulness.org.au/urge-surfing

Urge surfing is a mindfulness technique that asks us to ride the wave of an urge. Often, urges don’t last too long – even though they can feel like they are going to be there forever. The urge will peak and feel intense, but then crash and feel less intense (exactly like a wave crashing on the shore!) During the urge surfing, close your eyes, identify where the urge is coming from and focus your attention inward. Take some deep breaths. Place your feed on the ground. Ground yourself and try come into the present moment.

It might be hard at first – but the more you do it, the easier it’ll become.

Have you ever tried urge surfing or mindfulness? I’d love to hear your stories below :D

Have a nice weekend everyone – I hope the weather is nice wherever you are!

We are here if you need anything over the weekend - help is just one post away.

    Hello Everyone :D

Another week gone by, another Check In Thursday!
Tell us how the past week has been for you!

It's almost weekend time and its always good to be prepared, make sure we're engaging in self-care and look after ourselves in whichever way we can.
Lets make this week goal orientated! Tell us what your short term and long term goals are!
Its always good to have a vision and create necessary steps to reach that goal no matter how long the journey.
You may be aiming to save up money for something, you may want to work on your fitness, you may want to try a new hobby the possibilities are endless.

For people in states like Victoria where restrictions limit their ability to engage in particular activities, what can you do to help keep yourself engaged and more goal focused?

I know for the next week I want to make the effort to walk everyday and to do a workout at least 2-3 times in that week.
Make your goals as realistic for you as possible, that way next week we can discuss how things went.

Please remember even if you view this post throughout the coming days, we still encourage you to post your thoughts :D

Looking forward to hearing your responses! :D

Hey everyone, it's Thursday again :) I am glad the weekend is approaching ....

    How was your week?
Did anything interesting happen for you?
I'd love to hear if anyone has any goals they are working towards?
I know for me, I love having goals in mind and working towards them - even if they are small things, like tidying my room!

What have you got planned for this weekend?
I am planning on doing some baking, watching some TV (Schitt's Creek! one season left...) and going for a walk.
I think I'll make some banana bread - I found this recipe and it is delicious: https://www.taste.com.au/recipes/banana ... 87ce915717
Baking for me is a great way to be present in the moment.... what do you guys like doing to ground yourself?

Hope you are all well :D
Take care and enjoy your weekend
