LET'S TALK - Building Healthy Relationships

    Tue Sep 08, 2020 7:33 pm

    Hey everyone,

Hope you’re having a good week so far!

This week’s LET’S TALK topic is all about Building Healthy Relationships – specifically the relationship we have with ourselves.
When we find ourselves in the midst of a substance dependency, we can often be hard on ourselves. This can lead to feeling guilty about prioritising drugs over a friends or family, embarrassment about a past behaviour or ashamed of our ongoing use. These are three of many emotions we may feel during our journeys. It is important to understand that everyone experiences guilt, embarrassment or shame throughout their lives – these are all normal human emotions. Sometimes feeling this way leads us to using more because it’s hard to deal with these tough emotion and feelings. But what are some other ways we can deal with these uncomfortable emotions?

In these moments, it’s really important to practice self-compassion and be kind to ourselves. Everyone makes mistakes; it is part of life and part of being human. In these moments, it’s all about how we learn from our past behaviours, understand the lessons we’ve learned and implement these lessons moving forward. Can you tell us a time that you’ve learned a valuable lesson? How did you integrate these learnings into your everyday life?

Another way to practice self-compassion and kindness is to partake in different “self-care” strategies. There are heaps of different self-care ideas out there. One of my favourite ones is making a hot chocolate and watching something funny on Netflix…. Other things include taking a warm bath, going for a walk, or calling a friend. Can you share some beneficial self-care strategies? What things help you get through a tough day?

Another great idea is setting positive goals – this can help us foster a great relationship with ourselves as we work towards something. Ticking things off also releases the feel good chemical dopamine! Setting goals is all about making them SMART – specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound. What goals do you have around your substance use that you’d like to share?

I hope this post has given you some good ideas about how to foster positive relationships with yourself! If you liked this post, have a read of this website for some more ideas: https://www.psychologytoday.com/au/blog ... arting-now
