    Addicted Australia: Episode 2

    Tue Nov 17, 2020 5:13 pm

    Hello everyone! :)

Last week the first episode aired of Addicted Australia, and we got to know a little about each participant and their life experiences through different types of addiction.
Tonight at 8:30pm the second episode of the 'Addicted Australia' Documentary will be airing on SBS.

For some people you may have similar experiences to the participants on the documentary and although this can be relatable and helpful, some may find this triggering. If you find yourself feeling triggered by any content on the documentary, take a short break to ground yourself and we can also help support you on on the forums .

After you have viewed the next episode be sure to come back onto the forums to have a discussion with your peers. We'd love to know what thoughts and feelings came up for you whilst watching.
Take note of any themes you feel are also important to focus on.

Note: if you have missed last weeks episode you can view it on the SBS website or app. :)

    Hello again everyone :)

What were everyones thoughts and feelings towards this next episode? What stood out to you the most?

There were a number of themes that popped up among the group of participants.
Some of these common themes are:
-Support for families: Your mental health is important too, seek out self-help groups with other family members struggling to cope with another persons addiction, being mindful not to fall into that default 'rescue' position.
-Separate the addiction from the person; each participant has their own experience of how their addiction came about and the reasons why they use.
-Feeling of fear,; fear of the unknown, what things will be like after stopping a habit, thinking of how you would cope, fear of detoxing and the physical and mental strain associated with it.
-Getting back in touch with work/hobbies: one of the participants began work again and felt a sense of genuine joy and accomplishment. This is also an opportunity for more routine.
We are also coming up to the Christmas period/New Years which can be triggering for most people also.

Is there anyone on the show that you related most to? How did you feel after the episode ended? Did you feel triggered in anyway?

totally loved the show. It comes across as very authentic and not at all glamorized as with Hollywood addiction shows. I really felt for the mothers and what they go through. Families definitely needs tools to process their thoughts and feelings about their loved ones' adictions.

I definitely agree with you @melody , it allows us to follow the participants journey and their families. It's real and raw and good to see the wrap around support. Who else has seen Addicted Australia documentary and what are your thoughts?
