Addicted Australia - Episode 3

Tue Nov 24, 2020 9:02 am

Hello everyone!

Tonight at 8:30pm on SBS the third episode of Addicted Australia will be airing. Last week we got to know a little bit more about each participant, some of their families and their experiences through different types of addiction. The episodes have opened the door to allow us to see what wrap around treatment and support looks like.

For some people you may have similar experiences to the participants on the documentary and although this can be relatable and helpful, some may find this triggering. If you find yourself feeling triggered by any content on the documentary, take a short break to ground yourself and we can also help support you on on the forums .

After you have viewed the next episode we invite you to come back onto the forums to have a discussion with your peers. We'd love to know what thoughts and feelings came up for you whilst watching.

Take note of any themes you feel are important to focus on and any questions you may have throughout.

Also if you have missed last weeks episode you can view it on the SBS website or app :)

Hi there everyone! :)

What were your thoughts on episode 3 of Addicted Australia?

There were plenty of discussion points around the struggles of addiction and we got to see the ups and downs in each of the participants journey. Some participants had a few bumps along the way, a couple of lapses and others had made it weeks without using a substance. It just goes to show that everyones journey is unique and the fact that they made the choice to try again and continue treatment is truly inspiring.

One thing I noticed that stood out was the emphasis of the addiction being a symptom to something more underlying. Trauma was one that came up a lot throughout the documentary. Also having discussions around whether addiction is hereditary.

I'm curious to know, what stood out to you the most? How do you feel after watching the documentary?

Lets share our thoughts and insights together :)

Hi
I have only just watched episode 3 tonight found it quite confronting but definitely agree addiction comes from underlying issues such as trauma
How do you manage alcohol and gambling addiction when the underlying problem is trauma ?

Hi Cloudy ,

I'm so glad you've had a chance to watch Addicted Australia. You're right, these things can be quite confronting, especially when they resonate with our life experiences.

Working through your trauma can be really difficult and complicated work. It can feel quite heavy. But there are lots of different ways to work through this content. It can often be really useful to connect with professional support to develop a plan that suits you and your needs. Often personalising the approach and tailoring it to your situation will improve the chances of it working for you.

What are your thoughts around getting help with this?
