    Predisposition to alcoholism through genes

    Mon Aug 31, 2020 7:51 pm

    Hi Everyone
I am new here and I realise I have a problem with alcohol. I don’t drink every day and not every weekend But when I do there seems to be no off switch.
I come from a long line of older brothers, a father and his brother that are all alcoholics and I swore I would never be like them.
Does anyone know if genetics can play a part of an addiction?

Hey @Murf6333 welcome to Counselling online!
It's great you've decided to use this forum.
At the moment we have the Monday meetup from 8pm to 10pm - this could be a really good place to ask your question about genetics and share your experience :)

Hi @Murf6333 thanks for your post and for sharing your story with us :)

That is a really good question and something we will look into further. I'm hoping others from our community will be able to give some insight too.

While I don't have any specific facts about genetics, I think learned behaviours certainly can play a part with alcoholism especially within the family.

It's a really big step you've taken in recognising your problem with alcohol so well done.

I'm wondering if you currently have any supports in place or if there's any strategies you have tried to manage this?

Thank you all for your words of support.
I’m taking one week at a time.
I have the support of my partner so that is good and I don’t have a friend base that drinks at all or are the go out type, it’s usually me that instigates that so I intend to avoid those types of places where drinking is the only thing you do.
I really don’t know what else to share here.

    HI @Murf6333 you're most welcome :)

That's really great to hear that you have the support of your partner and that part of your strategy is to avoid places where drinking is the main activity.

It's important to take it day by day and recognising one's own triggers.

How have you been managing during this Covid19 period?

It’s been tougher through COVID as it is easy to duck to the bottle shop and buy a couple bottles of wine.
Just trying my best when I have to go to the shop to park the opposite side of the building to where the bottlo is so I don’t have to walk past it

you are spot on there, it has been tough during COVID to try and avoid alcohol use as I guess we find ourselves more at loose ends than during "normal" times. Yet, you have found something that is working for you enabling you to have greater distance figuratively and realistically between you and the bottle shop. Well done! Anything that helps you to minimise the urges to choose to give in and purchase wine is great. What else would you say has been working for you @Murf6333 ?

Hey there, I'm on a similar journey. My father was an alcoholic and I do wonder if that has somehow amplified my impulse to drink. I'm similar to what you have described I don't drink every day or every weekend but when I do it's like there's no way to stop. This is my 2nd week using this service and so far it has really helped me curb the impulse. good luck to you in your journey

What do you think has been able to help you at times to choose differently @SPN2020 rather than choose to drink?

Oddly I have water ice locks on hand that I have when I first feel like a drink, only seem to need one to take my mind off getting a drink.
Also I have taken back up my hobby of building wooden model boats.

Now that is a really good strategy to use, how do you think it works in your case? What do the ice blocks seem to do for you do you think

I think it’s a combination of keeping my hands busy and the cold sensation,
    I’ll probably get diabetes instead!
It’s a start and I don’t know when I’ll have to change tactics

    Unfortunately I slipped last night,
Not as much as I would have but I went the week without as I allotted and had dinner last night and was committed to two drinks, I had more but not like I usually would have.
I am going to try a gain for the week and next weekend only two drinks.
