Hi @Katr it's so great to hear that you're currently cutting down and being more mindful of your substance use :)

It's fantastic that the self-help modules have been useful in helping you to learn more about yourself.

It definitely can feel scary opening up and sharing our own personal story but it's also a big step in the recovery process. It takes a lot of courage reaching out, it's really good that you've joined us on the forum.

I'm wondering if you've considered telephone counselling or counselling through web-chat as a starting point? This process can often help people feel more comfortable opening up and also it can be a big relief to talk to someone without being judged.

It's always good to equip ourselves with more tools to get through tough times and having extra support through a GP or Social Worker can be beneficial too.

How are you going this evening?

    Hello members!
As you know the weekend is approaching and even though weekends give us that freedom away from our busy schedules, it is also a time to be extra cautious. Some of us may associate weekends with using substances to wind down at the end of the week or for pleasure, but we also know this can lead us into a bit of a deceiving trap.

What are everyones plans to keep sober this weekend? What other things can you do to help yourself relax or wind down? What can you do to prevent falling into these traps?

    Some helpful tips:
    - Steering clear of friendship groups you believe might stand as a roadblock or trigger for you.
    - Engaging in new activities, e.g exercise, playing board games, reading a new book, watching movies, getting in touch with your creative side by drawing/painting, going out for a meal at a new restaurant.
    - Think about all the reasons why you have stopped using in the first place to act as a reminder and extra motivation.
    - Think of the people and/or services you can call on for some support if needed, including members on the forums.

Remember, being positive is a great thing, but we can't expect ourselves to remain positive all the time. There are days or even weeks where things may feel extra heavy than other times. Give yourself permission to feel what you are feeling and accept it as just another day riding that wave in the journey of reaching your ultimate goal of remaining sober. Think about how you can look after yourself on these days and not how to 'get rid of' or 'fix' these feelings.

In preparation for the weekend, try this tool and reference back to it if you feel you need to:
    1. Write at least 3 short term goals for your future of being sober. (e.g financial, employment, self-care, travel)
    2. Write at least 3 reminders to help keep you on track.
    3. Write at least 3 things that you have achieved so far on your journey.

Keep pushing through! You can't change choices made in the past but you do have the power to make appropriate choices at present.

Hi everyone Thursday has come around again and it has been great reading through your posts so far :)

How has your week been? What have you got planned for the weekend?

What are some things that have worked for you over the past few weeks, especially where we have needed to keep busy at home?

Here are some ideas for things to do on the weekend to keep track with staying sober:

    - now is the time to refocus and do all the little things that you had no time to do before
    - keeping busy and in the present really helps with staying sober
    - Get out the cookbook (blow the dust off the cover!) and plan a wonderful meal... then cook and eat it :)
    - Wash your dog or just cuddle them, show them love and talk to them - animals love any sign of affection and give it back straight away (sometimes that is all we need at that moment..)
Sometimes when we feel that urge, it is as a replacement for something that we feel is missing in our lives ....and a cuddle or playing a game with your loved one whether furry, feathery or a human is a great way to increase your 'feel good' hormones :)
Most of all, be kind to yourself, check in with friends or family that are supporting you in your recovery...

The take away being that you are important and that even little things like listening to your favourite music and soaking in a bath will help you make it through the weekend and out the other end -

In preparation for the weekend, try this tool and reference back to it if you feel you need to:
    1. Write at least 3 reminders to help keep you on track - perhaps do this in a journal or a list that you stick up in the bathroom.
    2. Write at least 3 things that you have achieved so far on your journey.
    3. Write down a couple of longer term goals with a timeline.

    Stay well everyone x
