Share an inspiring or motivating quote

    Mon Apr 19, 2021 12:45 pm

    Hi everyone,

We understand that weekends are the hardest moment of the week for many trying to kick-off an addiction. For this reason, we’re going to be having weekly activities on Saturday and Sunday. The main goal is for everyone to be able to connect with other members at the same time, get support and advice from the community, as well as the motivation, inspiration and conviction to keep pushing yourself forward on this journey.

-Share an inspiring or motivating quote: share an inspiring or motivating quote, o a quotes that makes you reflect, and you can also explain why/what you like about that quote. :)

    For example:
    • "And this, too, shall pass away"
    • "The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall." -Nelson Mandela
    • "The way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing." -Walt Disney

Sundays, alternating fortnightly with “3 things to be grateful for”.

We hope you find the activities useful, fun and entertaining. Any feedback will help us keep improving this space for the benefit of all.

The new activities will be running in addition to our weekly Monday Meetup and Thursday Check-in meetings.

Looking forward to seeing you around the forums.

    Hi everyone,

Today's the first Sunday we will be running our new fortnightly activity called "Share an inspiring or motivating quote". I'm going to jump straight in to it with the following quote:

"There was never a night or a problem that could defeat sunrise or hope" (Bernard Williams).

This is one of my favourite quotes because it gives me a sense of hope every time I'm feeling overwhelmed, stressed or in a 'dark moment' in my life. It's easy to forget there's a light at the end of the tunnel when we're in the tunnel.

I would love to read some of your favourite quotes, or quotes that have inspired you or motivated you.

@Katiee posted earlier in another thread a quote that I think is worth sharing here with you all: "pain is inevitable; suffering is optional

    Hello everyone,

Today is World Laughter Day! So we're going to swap 'Share an inspiring or motivating quote' to 'share your favourite joke' this time.

This is one of my favourite jokes. Hope it sparks a giggle. :D

Once my dog ate all the Scrabble tiles.

He kept leaving little messages around the house.

    Hi everyone,

It's time for 'Share an inspiring or motivating quote' today, so here goes one of mine:
“All things are difficult before they are easy” (Thomas Fuller)
In terms of recovery, how would you apply this quote to your journey?

A favourite quote of mine and something I remind myself "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result."

    Hello lovely people,

It's time for one of my favourite activities in the forums, "Share an inspiring or motivating quote".

I'm going to start off the activity today with the following:

“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” – Confucius

    How does this quote relate/apply to your journeys? @Craig PW @ScorpionPW @Gizelle @Katiee @Minnie mouse @Scotland123 @Simply me @dperry586

Ambling is a pace I can maintain, and this quote evokes this way for me @Peace Dove ....
Ive had a few lapses, but avoided a relapse, subtle difference mayhaps, but an important one on my journey. Picking up the pieces, before I went aaaaahhh **** it Ive had a few may as well immerse. Despite strong urges to make a quicker, unwise in the longer term decision, some stubborn aspect stepped in and.....I ambled along.
No graceful poise, more like fingernails on precipice edge....ambling.....

As Clarissa Pinkola Estes says "Perfection is the enemy of done". She's relating it to her writing, I can relate it to sobriety with relative ease....

    Very good reflection @Simply me.

Subtle but very important difference. It's good to understand and accept that lapses and relapses are part of the process. And to be kind to ourselves about it too because sometimes (many times) we can be our own worst judges, and then instead of learning from what happened, we can spiral back into old habits as you've described. So seriously, good job on being spot on and bouncing back. You should be proud of yourself. 8-)

Thank you for sharing what's been going on with you. We're not here to judge you, so I want to acknowledge the courage it takes to also come here and say "hey, I had a lapse".

That's a powerful quote too, and it's fantastic how you've related it to your sobriety journey.

Also, "amble" is a new word for me. So thank you for that, I've learned something new today.

And welcome back, it's great to have you around in the forums again. :)

Thanks @Peace Dove ...............great idea.............I love hearing different perspectives and interpretations of one simple line. So what's my take on this qoute???

“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” – Confucius

Recovery isn't a destination..........it doesn't have a timeframe.............no one size fits all...........my version of recovery is mine and will differ from others versions.

The further along the journey I go the more I realise that I'm "IN" recovery..........I don't think it's something I'll ever achieve..........as such, it doesn't matter how slowly I go. Every day I learn something new. About myself. About life. About recovery and what it is and what it takes..........for me.

I've realised that recovery started for me the very first time I questioned my substance intake and as I sit here now over twenty five years later with 5 and a half years sobriety under my belt this quote speaks to me. That journey has been full of stops and starts. Of thinking I've got this and falling back into the lifestyle harder each time. Of thinking I don't have a problem. Of realising I was powerless to stop it. Of almost giving up on myself and life completley. Of just giving it one more go and now sitting securely in the knowledge that I'm not guaranteed to succeed this time.

All I know is that if I just keep setting goals and working towards them I'll be okay. I may never achieve those goals but if I don't work towards something I'm never going to get anywhere. All that actually matters is taking each day as it comes. Having another go today if yesterday didn't go to plan. Of learning a lesson and just not stopping. As long as I keep working towards my version of recovery I'm doing alright because the second I give up and stay still I'm in trouble.

Just keep going and don't stop.

“It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” – Confucius is a great quote @Peace Dove! Thanks for the tag :)

The first thing that comes to mind for me is progress not perfection.

It took me a fairly gruelling process that lasted 2 years of attempting multiple detoxes before I was able to get clean and stay clean and in recovery. In that time, every time I went to detox I would try different techniques and cocktails of substances to attempt to control my use. But every time I arrived at a point where I had to go to detox it was like another layer of denial had been stripped away. And every time I detoxed I would learn something new.

The most important thing in this time was that I knew SOMETHING needed to change. It just took me a while to learn that that 'something' was actually everything. I realised, without a shadow of a doubt that I needed complete abstinence and that I couldn't get away with using anything in a way that was manageable or safe.

But the thing is, I couldn't have arrived at that point at any other time than when I did. I had to go through the process and end up in enough pain to realise that to be my truth.

This quote for me really speaks to the fact that recovery is about the journey and not the destination and everybody will have to go to different lengths and experience different things to get the meaningful life change they seek.

The most important thing is to never give up giving up!
