Love this one @redbeanbillee, thanks for sharing!

It has been so true for me too that building new, healthy connections has been the most crucial part of my on going recovery.

When I stopped using I was so scared because I knew I couldn't keep living the way I was but every part of my life, identity and connections was wrapped up in substance use.

I thought it would be a lonely road and I thought it would only be a matter of time until I picked up again because of how alone I felt.

It was then through support groups in the community and meeting other people who were also in recovery, going through what I was that this started to shift. I met people who were further along than me and that gave me hope that it was possible for me too. It was also an opportunity to be around like minded people who were living a recovery focussed life. It was from this recovery community that I built the foundations for my life the way it is now and I honestly don't think I would have made it without this.

It's also a good reminder that to maintain my recovery, I need to maintain my healthy and loving connections in my life and continue to move towards things that give me a sense of purpose. This is because if I disconnect from the things that are meaningful to me then my addiction will have an opportunity to gain some power again as I will seek to find solace in something outside of myself that can change the way that I feel and give me some comfort.

It's a day at a time and just for today, I choose recovery as I have everyday for over 13 years now.

It would be great to hear what others experiences of the importance of building new connections have been on the recovery journey :D

hello hello everyone! This week I wanted to share a quote from Thomas Edison

"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work"

I think we can all relate to that gut-wrenching feeling of thinking we've failed. Thinking we've put everything in place to ensure we'll stay the course, won't fall into urges, won't slip up. It's painful, but as Edison points out, it isn't truly a failure, it's just the process of working out what works for us! Everyone is different, and will have a different recovery journey. Different ways to manage urges, different ways to keep ourselves healthy, and it takes time to work out what those are, and that's okay!

So how about everyone else? Any quotes that help you?

I love that one @Lhiver, such a great reminder that recovery is always possible it's just a matter of finding the right kind of support and everybodies recovery is as individual as their fingerprint.

A quote that comes to mind for me is something I heard in a NA meeting once. It was "fishes swim, horses gallop and addicts use", now I understand that the word "addict" isn't something that everybody feels comfortable identifying with but for me this was just a reminder to not be hard on myself if I was to lapse. The reminder that I had been living a particular way and using drugs to cope with life for so long that it was this new life, a life of recovery and finding new ways to cope that was new and strange and uncomfortable. That if I fell back into old behaviours momentarily, I didn't have to be so hard on myself but rather observe the behaviour, reset and realign with the new life I am trying to live. I've been in recovery for over 13 years now and still do it a day at a time, each day is a new opportunity to reset and take a step closer to being my true self and not somebody who acts out on behaviours that do not align with my values to cope with life.

I'm really interested to hear how this resonates and what other quotes people have to share! :D

“Don’t let yesterday take up too much of today.” — Will Rogers

It's one of my new favourites. There's nothing about yesterday I can change..............but I can get the most out of today. I've been using it quite a bit lately and it's helping my frame of mind.

Okay ... First thing that came to mind was to quote an entire poem.. I've read this dozens and dozens of times over the past half decade or more... Helps every time

"A cub of the Divine Lion, somehow I found myself confined in a sheepfold of frailties and limitations. Fear-filled, living long with sheep, day after day I bleated. I forgot my affrighting bellow that banishes all enemy sorrows.

O invincible Lion of the Self! Thou didst drag me to the water hole of meditation, saying: ‘Thou art a lion, not a sheep! Open thine eyes, and roar!’

After Thy hard shakings of spiritual urge, I gazed into the crystal pool of peace. Lo, I saw my face like unto Thine!

I know now that I am a lion of cosmic power. Bleating no more, I shake the error forest with reverberations of Thine almighty voice. In divine freedom I bound through the jungle of earthly delusions, devouring the little creatures of vexing worries and timidities, and the wild hyenas of disbelief.

O Lion of Liberation, ever send through me Thy roar of all-conquering courage!"

From possibly my favourite movie/piece of art, My Dinner With Andre

"OK. Yes, we are bored. We're all bored now. But has it ever occurred to you Wally, that the process that creates this boredom that we see in the world now may very well be a self-perpetuating, unconscious form of brainwashing, created by a world totalitarian government based on money, and that all of this is much more dangerous than one thinks? And it's not just a question of individual survival Wally, but that somebody who's bored is asleep, and somebody who's asleep will not say no.”

    HIMSELF - Andre Gregory

"They've built their own prison, so they exist in a state of schizophrenia. They're both guards and prisoners and as a result they no longer have, having been lobotomized, the capacity to leave the prison they've made, or to even see it as a prison."

    "Don't be afraid
It's all make believe any way

Despite what you hear people say
Because the fears keep us chained"

"That's just my life cycle, nothing matters but setting me free,
Because my freedom and hip hop be meaning everything to me,
Now face values and fashions empower everything we be,
Believing everything we hear, and everything we see,
So if our eyes tell us lies, then we usually find,
Our visions cluttered by this scutter so the truth is we're blind,
It's just poison food for thought for these dellusionary minds,
So stop walking straight and narrow down illusionary lines."

"I write to free the dumb, though freedom hasn't come
I let it ring to leave a message on my answering machine
I see a movement has begun
As soon as we become the true truth seekers
    Down with this Babylon regime"

Between a heavenly future, and a hell of a past"

    "See my shadow changing,
    Stretching up and over me.
    Soften this old armor.
Hoping I can clear the way

    Coming out the other side.
    Step into the shadow"

"A lot of people see shit in their lives
I find the dark days give a definition of light
I find the dark days and the truly miserable times
Are the ones that give us strength and the will to survive
And at the time it might not be easy, I know this
When all avenues will seem hopeless
    With all these sensations, experimentation
Can lead to the road less taken"

It's amazing. The entire movie, bar the opening 5-10 minutes, is just 2 guys sitting in a restaurant talking. Never thought I'd enjoy such a concept... Until i saw it the first time. Seen many more times since

Full movie is all over the internet. YouTube for instance.

I wanted to share a quote I got reminded of today when I was delivering training that I absolutely love.

"Rarely does a response make something better" - Brene Brown.

It just reminds me that the power of empathy, meeting somebody in their distress and just letting them know they are not alone can have so much power in and of itself.

It would be great to know how this resonates for others? :D

“Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterwards.” ―Vernon Sanders Law

I came across this quote during the week and I just love it. Being solution focused is something I’ve really tried to work on over the years. Just recently it’s been really important as I’ve found challenges mounting and feeling like multiple negative things have been happening at once. I’ve felt like I could easily fall into the “Why are all these bad things happening to me?” mindset and get resentful. I’ve been able to look for the solutions though and learn a lot about myself.

By reflecting on what’s happened and how I’ve got through it I can find not only the lessons but the knowledge that I’ll be okay if it happens again. Sometimes the lesson is not to do something again…………..but unfortunately the only way to find out sometimes is by trying.

Life is about learning from experience.

hi everyone! Today I wanted to share with you all a quote I really love from Marilyn Monroe!
Sometimes things have to fall apart, so that better things can fall together
It's a really simple sentiment but I think it encapsulates a lot of elements of recovery. It can be hard to feel motivated to keep going when it feels like everything is crumbling around us, but, as Marilyn says, remind yourself that it is an opportunity to create/find better things.

What quotes resonate with you all?

I really like this one @Lhiver, thanks for the tag :)

It's a great reminder that so many times in my life when I've experienced loss or difficult situations that don't make sense, it is almost always because it needs to happen to make room for something bigger and better that I can't comprehend at the time.

A quote I would like to share is...

"We can only keep what we have by giving it away". This is something that I heard in my early days of recovery and it reminds me that it's really important that no matter how much time I have in recovery, it is important that I make myself available to give what was freely given to me when I first got clean by being there to share my experience and help people along the way. I always feel a sense of unconditional connection and gratitude when I give back in my recovery community, attend meetings and feel a part of the place that allowed me the freedom to build the life I have today.

It would be great to hear other quotes people have to share or how any of this resonates :D

    Love this @Lhiver

I've spent a lot of time trying to hold things together when I would have been better off just letting go and starting again. Who cares if it all falls apart? There'll be new experiences and new learnings along the way. Sometimes I gat scared of change too and I want to keep things the way they are but when they fall apart I find new ways of doing things. I've found out a lot about myself when things have fallen apart. I've found out what I'm capable of surviving and that I have strengths I never knew I had.

Nowadays when things go wrong I can look back and see what I've got through and realise that it's not necessarily as tough as I think it might be. Getting through those tough times has given me hope.

This one has resonated for me a bit lately..........."Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts." — Winston S. Churchill

Love this one @PnorkelPW...such a good reminder to keep going through the ups and downs of life. To know that a human experience is one that is forever shifting and changing. And how important it is to seek growth on the other side of struggle and take moments to find things to be grateful for along the way.
